This exhibition features work by two working-class artists originally hailing from Manchester, Ellie Laycock and Laura Noble. Curated by Laura Noble, Garage Gallery and LANG are proud to present Change it!
Change It! is an artistic response, reaction and demand to the cost of greed crisis affecting so many in the UK and globally. “Change It! is our call to action for everybody.”
Where artists lead developers follow. Working class artists move to affordable areas, enriching the cultural capital of the neighbourhood and its community. Soon after, property developers show up to capitalise on this new creative renaissance. Then gentrification ensues, the artists are forced to relocate to other affordable areas in order to survive, and the cycle continues. Wealthy newcomers rarely integrate with existing communities and the local economy, preferring to establish their own.
As the cost of living crisis has affected not just the working, but also the middle classes, this exhibition talks about the reality affecting millions. Change It! is about the crisis that politicians and the legacy media are ignoring. It reflects the truths of daily life and showcases the roots and principles of their artistic practice.
